A Design-Foward Apporach

to Devising New Theater

A Design-Forward approach to devising new theater allows for exploration of the underlying source material not only through text, but also visually, rhythmically, spatially, sonically, and musically to get inside the material and uncover the most theatrically expressive production possible. This devising process explores how design elements (lighting, scenery, music, puppetry, projection etc.) can be elevated to co-equal storytelling elements on the same level as text. Designers are part of the process from inception; they actively participate in rehearsals along with actors. When designers engage in the generative phase of the devising process, their artistry becomes part of the play’s DNA.
